UAE AI-powered system for detecting media misinformation

The UAE is strengthening its fight against misinformation with the development of a new AI-powered system designed to monitor, analyse and verify digital media content.

The system is being developed by the International Centre for Combating Media Disinformation (ICCMD) and was announced alongside the launch of an International Charter for Media Integrity and Combating Disinformation.

According to the announcement, the technology will monitor digital content, analyse keywords, topics and media narratives, and track how potentially misleading information spreads. It will also identify emerging trends and indicators that could help media professionals detect misinformation faster.

How will the AI system work?

The platform will combine artificial intelligence with professional expertise to support data analysis and content verification. Rather than replacing journalists and fact-checkers, the technology is intended to improve the speed and efficiency of identifying potentially misleading content.

For UAE news organisations, this could provide an additional layer of AI-assisted fact-checking, particularly as digital platforms make it easier for false claims, manipulated media and AI-generated content to spread rapidly.

What does it mean for UAE users?

For readers and social media users in the UAE, stronger AI-based media verification could make it easier for trusted organisations to identify questionable information before it reaches a wider audience.

The initiative also highlights the growing role of AI tools, machine learning and digital technology in journalism. As generative AI makes the creation of realistic text, images, audio and video easier, media organisations will increasingly need technology capable of analysing both the content itself and how it spreads online.

The ICCMD has also called for greater cooperation between media organisations, professional bodies, academic institutions and researchers.

For the UAE’s growing technology and AI ecosystem, the initiative reflects a broader shift towards using artificial intelligence for digital safety, information integrity and smarter media monitoring.
